Our first real foray into designing powerful applications for mobile devices started with the BlackBerry. Some initial designs by an outside vendor had come across my desk and I hit the roof when I saw how horrible they were. I knew this could be a key new product for E*trade, as mobile adoption rates increased worldwide... what I didn't realize was how much overwhelmingly positive feedback we’d get for it. Even the CEO of Research In Motion called it the best application that had been design for the BlackBerry device to date. Pretty cool.
So when talk of building an iPhone app as well started, I was all over it. I cranked out the initial screen designs in a week, to present to Apple's team of "Evangelists". We got rave reviews for our UI and design from them, but went back to further develop and tweak. A month later we had final pixel-perfect comps and a working prototype for approval. Now it's the #1 Financial App on iTunes and up for several awards including Apple's "App of the Year". Good stuff.
